We live in an age that values appearance over substance.  It is the case that as a society we believe that appearance equates with success, power and even basic goodness.  Is it any surprise then that the cosmetics industry is one of the largest businesses in the world and that cosmetic surgery is a huge growth sector?  But what is the true cost of cosmetic surgery?

For all sorts of reasons, ordinary people are turning to cosmetic surgery procedures to alter their appearance.  Whether it is to rectify damage incurred in an accident or to improve their appearance there is a huge range of surgical interventions available.  These range from minor interventions to major procedures.  For many people the results are what counts and they are willing to pay well for them.  But the bottom line is not to be found by looking at cosmetic surgery prices in isolation.  There are many other factors to look at in establishing the true cost of cosmetic surgery and some of these are set out below.

1.        The Monetary Cost

There are plenty of sites that will give you lists of plastic surgery prices and even more that will advertise given procedures at given prices.  Here at Rhinoplasty Cost we want to look beyond this.  The headline price, even at the best of times, will conceal other costs.

The cosmetic surgery prices given are usually just the cost of the procedure alone.  This means that you may have additional fees to cover the hospital fees and additional essential services, such as the anaesthetist’s fees.   Some procedures require an overnight stay in the hospital or clinic which may not be included.  There may also be additional fees for the necessary follow up consultations.  So when seeking a quote make sure it specifies exactly what is and is not included.  In the best case scenario you will also have to include costs such as travel, accommodation, and time off work.   When factoring in the latter consider the fact that , depending on the surgery, you may not be able to work for days or even weeks afterwards.  These expenses will be even higher if you have to travel for the procedure either at home or abroad.  Bear in mind that while cheap cosmetic surgery may be available overseas, there will be additional expenses which may be considerable in simply getting there.

You also need to factor in the potential cost of something going wrong.  All surgery carries an element of risk and cosmetic surgery is no exception.  Even a minor complication may require spending additional time in the cosmetic surgery clinic and incur extra expenses.   More serious complications may arise and there is always the possibility that the surgery will not be successful.  Remedying problems will cost money and will probably not be included in the original price.

2.       Emotional

In any cost benefit analysis of cosmetic surgery the emotional cost is as important as the financial cost.  The important question here is what do you consider your happiness to be worth and how much time and money are you willing to invest in it?  We choose plastic surgery for many reasons, sometimes because a surgical intervention will improve our physical health but more often because it will improve our emotional health.  There is plenty of evidence to show that people who are happy with their appearance are happier in general.  Certainly, for many people a successful cosmetic procedure will greatly improve their self-esteem and happiness.  The inverse of this also applies.  Cosmetic surgery that goes wrong will cause the client emotional pain and unhappiness.   The often unconsidered emotional cost in cosmetic surgery is the emotional cost incurred by unrealistic expectations.  While cosmetic surgery can lead to a physical improvement, a patient may have unattainable hopes and dreams.  Disappointment with the results of a procedure will lead to dissatisfaction if not depression.  For this reason it is important to talk with your surgeon and to listen carefully to what he or she says so that you understand exactly what is possible and what you can and cannot expect to achieve from any given operation.

3.       Time

Time is money and therefore you must factor your time into the equation when considering the real cost of cosmetic surgery as outlined above.  Any procedure will take time to complete, whether it is a few minutes or several hours and may also require an overnight or two in the cosmetic surgery clinic.  There will be additional time involved in pre- and post-operative consultations with your medical team.  There may also be travel time getting to and from the clinic.  However, the biggest expenditure of time will be involved in recuperating from the procedure.  Even if there are no complications arising it can take weeks to recover fully from a cosmetic surgery.  During that time you may be unable to carry out some or all of your daily tasks or work.   More importantly, it can take considerable time for the effects of the surgery to bed in and for you to get a full picture of the results.

4.       Health

There is an old saying that health is wealth and you should also consider the benefits or dangers of any cosmetic surgery on your general health.  Your surgeon should discuss this with you at your initial consultation and it is imperative that they are aware of any underlying health problems you may have and your full medical history.  If surgery is successful it may not just improve your appearance it may well improve your general health too; for example,  a septoplasty can improve the function of your nose as much as the appearance or the weight loss arising from liposuction will have additional benefit to your general health.  Other procedures may have no obvious general health benefit but it is generally accepted that emotional wellbeing has a positive effect on general wellbeing.    Once again, though, you must consider the potential costs of cosmetic sugery that goes wrong.  A botched plastic surgery can result in serious complications that have a major negative impact on your health.  For this reason alone, you should always try and get the best plastic surgeon that you can.

Cosmetic surgery is not to be undertaken lightly.  Even simple cosmetic surgery procedures carry costs and risks.  The larger and more invasive the procedure the greater and the cost and the risk but very often the greater the potential results.  Whatever cosmetic surgery you are considering it is important to consider all the possible costs to see if you really can afford it.  If you are considering cosmetic surgery and are worried about the cost then you should research the options for cosmetic surgery financing.  Finally, whatever the cost you must seek the best medical advice you can get.  The more you prepare and plan to more likely you are to achieve the cosmetic results that you seek.
